Apr 20, 2017 Can’t Remove Purgeable Disk Space. Note: If you have Mac OS High Sierra installed, you need this guide instead. When trying to install Bootcamp on my MacBook Pro, I had to delete a lot of files to get enough space to be able to accommodate for a Bootcamp partition on the drive. The developers behind DaisyDisk are one of the few to have studied the new APFS system in-depth. DaisyDisk has long been the best utility to find large files or recover disk space on Mac but now it has been updated to find and delete “purgeable space” on High Sierra that is no longer visible in macOS.
About This Mac > Storage
Many users who upgrade to macOS High Sierra get confused by what they see in About This Mac > Storage window. Particularly, the System category appears to take an unreasonable lot of space.

Usually it’s a combination of factors. The System is a bit of a catch-all category. It includes not only the /System Start up mac boot camp. folder, but also many other folders related to macOS and applications all over your disk.
So, the first thing you can do is to scan your disk with DaisyDisk and look for space hogs in areas such as /System, /private, ~/Library Best traktor scratch pro 2 torrent mac. and others. You may find some temporary files or caches that were not disposed properly.

Next, look at the figure of available space.
In certain cases you’ll notice that you may still have a lot of available space, but it’s simply not shown on the chart.
This happens because in macOS High Sierra, the purgeable space is included into the System category, unlike previous macOS versions, which used to have a special category — Purgeable.
And the amount of purgeable space in macOS High Sierra has also grown compared to the previous versions, because the new APFS file system keeps saving hourly temporary snapshots for the Time Machine and deletes them only when necessary. In result, the purgeable space is allowed to grow until 80% of the disk is occupied. This can make the System look unnecessarily bloated on the chart of About This Mac.

DaisyDisk clears this confusion by showing separately how much space is actually used by files and by the purgeable space, and therefore how much space is currently available to the applications.
Notice that you can separately see free space and free + purgeable, the latter corresponding to the “available space” in About This Mac. The purgeable space can be found inside the hidden space item.
As a useful addition, you can use DaisyDisk to also forcedly reclaim the purgeable space, if necessary.

[Important update] DaisyDisk 4.10 adds support of APFS Snapshots
Ever since macOS Catalina was introduced, many Mac users noticed that their disks eventually get full without obvious reason. A quick scan in DaisyDisk typically reveals a big chunk of “hidden space“, which means the system is using more disk space than it’s possible to reveal by scanning, even with elevated permissions (scanning “as Administrator”).
The reason for this problem is that macOS is making temporary backups of the system, so called local snapshots, temporarily locking big amounts of disk space in an area of the disk that is fully opaque to the users. Eventually when the snapshots get transferred to the permanent storage, such as the Time Capsule, or as the snapshots become too old and get replaced by newer ones, macOS releases the disk space. However, the backup process is continuous and therefore there is always a certain amount of disk space that is locked by macOS for the snapshots.
This is how macOS Catalina works and it’s not supposed to even be a problem or require any maintenance from the user. Rapper with auto tune implant. However, in certain cases, you just need to free up the space urgently, and it’s quite confusing that you don’t have control over a big chunk of your disk.
Thankfully, the new version of DaisyDisk (4.10) is making it much easier to reveal the macOS’ hidden space, and for the part that cannot be revealed – understand its internal structure and even provide tools to reclaim it by demand.

In particular, the new DaisyDisk cuts down the amount of hidden space by revealing some obscure system items such as non-linked content of the “firmlinked” Data volume (under /System/Volumes/Data), the virtual memory volume (under /private/var/VM) and some other.
Besides, DaisyDisk now shows a breakdown of the hidden space that includes the following items:
All in all, the new DaisyDisk is making a huge step to return you understanding and control of your disk on macOS Catalina, and probably provides the most exhaustive and informative view of your disk compared to any other disk utility.
